What is ramadan?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. During Ramadan, adult Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, refraining from eating, drinking, smoking, and marital relations, as an act of worship and to grow closer to God. The fast is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is a time for spiritual growth, charity, and increased devotion and worship. The ending of Ramadan is marked by the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a festive holiday.
