What is a coffer?

A coffer is/are a recessed panel in a ceiling, dome, soffit, or vault. Often found in classical architecture, coffers are decorative sunken panels that can be square, rectangular, or octagonal in shape and serve both aesthetic and structural purposes, such as lightening the weight of a ceiling or dome. The term “coffer” also refers to a strongbox or small chest for holding valuables or money.
