What is an acolyte?

An acolyte is/are an individual who assists in the performance of religious ceremonial duties, often in the context of Christian liturgy, such as by helping the priest during services, carrying a processional cross, or lighting altar candles. The term can also be used more broadly to refer to a follower or assistant in various non-religious contexts, typically someone who is a devoted follower or admirer of a particular person, ideology, or cause.
