What is groundhog day?

Groundhog Day is an annual celebration that takes place on February 2nd in the United States and Canada, where folklore suggests that if a groundhog emerges from its burrow and sees its shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat into its den and winter will persist for six more weeks; if it does not see its shadow because of cloudiness, spring will arrive early. The most famous Groundhog Day celebration is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania with Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog. Groundhog Day has also entered popular culture as a concept, particularly after the 1993 film of the same name, denoting a situation in which events appear to be repeating themselves in a cycle.
